HFC-134a the refrigerator coolant

Boulder, CO – Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerants have been verified as harmless to ozone by tests conducted at the Aeronomy Laboratory of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA measured the reactions that lead to ozone destruction and found HFCs to be much more ozone-friendly than chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), HFCs live a much shorter time in the atmosphere.
One HFC refrigerant – HFC-134a – already is used in air conditioners, in a home refrigerator, freezers and automobiles. Appliance manufacturers most of the word are expected to make HFC-134a the dominant refrigerator coolant. CFC-12 will no longer be produced in most nations.

Canadian scientists verify that ozone thickness determines radiation hazard.

Toronto, Ontario Canada – Confirmation of the link between the thickness of the protective ozone layer and the amount of cancer causing UV-B radiation reaching the Earth's surface has been reported by Canadian researchers. Most UV-B increases were detected during the winter months when the ozone layer traditionally is thinnest. The researchers also found that from 1989 to 1993, UV-B levels rose by 15 percent from seasonal averages as scientists recorded a gradual thinning of average ozone layer thickness.
UV-B radiation, which occurs in the ultraviolet spectrum, has the ability to damage living cells. Over exposure to UV-B can result in sunburns. Scientists theorize that as higher levels reach the Eart's surface, skin cancers and cataracts in humans will greatly increase and crop growth will be stunted.
As chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants have been found to accelerate thinning of the ozone layer, governments worldwide have agreed to halt production of the chemical within a few years.
Prolonged exposure to Ultraviolet (UV) A and B radiation can cause sunburns, premature skin aging, skin cancers, cataracts and other eye and skin diseases. It has been shown that UV can affect the immune system of the skin.
The rate of skin cancer in the Vancouver British Columbia population has doubled over the last 20 years. In Canada about 80,000 Canadians are expected to develop skin cancer. One in seven of today’s children is expected to develop some form of skin cancer in his or her lifetime. Evidence indicates that 85 per cent or more of all skin cancers are caused by exposure to UV radiation.
